Letters
Throughout the 1700s, it was common to see certain letters such as the long s (ʃ ). However, this looks like a lower case ‘-f’ and so caused problems.
In the 1700s, a long ‘s’ (ʃ ) was used at the beginning and middle of words, and a short ‘-s’ was used at the end. This structure continued to be used until the end of the eighteenth century with few exceptions.
At the end of the 18th century, new types were designed which omitted the ‘ʃ ’.
Exam tip: You can also use the term ‘Eth’ instead of ‘the long s’. However, ‘Eth’ always begins with a capital letter!
